Staff Pharmacist
After pharmacy school, I worked as a staff pharmacist part-time while
I pursued my degree in internal medicine. My degree as a pharmacist would
augment my future career as a doctor.
Medical Resident/Medical Doctor (outside of pharmacy)
After graduation from medical school, I continued my training as a medical
resident studying internal medicine. Following residency, I took on a
position in a hospital-owned medical specialty group. I worked in a group
of three doctors performing general internal medicine duties. The hospital
merged with other hospital and medical facilities, resulting in a much
larger operation with over 200 doctors and a group of six hospitals. I
decided it was time to move to a much smaller setting.
Group Physician (outside of pharmacy)
I found a small setting that suited my goals for my medical practice.
It had an excellent reputation for quality care. Unfortunately, the practice
followed the trend of other hospital-owned practices across the country
and ultimately dissolved. I found myself seeking yet another smaller setting.
Private Physician (outside of pharmacy)
I relocated my family to Albany, Georgia, where I took on an
opportunity to start my own practice. This was one of the most challenging
times of my career building a medical practice from scratch. There
were many advantages (it was thoroughly my own), and certainly some disadvantages
(on call 24/7). Although the practice was working out, the move for my
family, particularly the change in schools for my children, was not. My
wife and I decided to move back to our home state and for me to start
over in an entirely different direction.
Staff Pharmacist
This career move was the one I was seeking. Although I joined Medco Health
as a staff or entry level pharmacist (to learn the ways of the company
and to get my feet wet as a pharmacist after so many years away from the
profession), it allowed me to combine the two professions I love, pharmacy
and medicine. It only took three months before I became a clinical practice
manager, the first one ever for Medco Health.
Clinical Practice Manager
I am proud to be Medco Health's first Clinical Practice Manager.
This position combines research and clinical aspects of pharmacy. I work
through questions and issues posed by other pharmacists and help develop
informed decisions about one medical/pharmacy matter or another. I do
research studies and look into ways in which Medco Health can make the
biggest impact on managing pharmacy benefits. I have found the position
that I love! The culture here is one of openness and change, a willingness
to try something new and it offers tremendous opportunity for personal
and professional growth. If you're reading this, I say go for it.
Your career potential is only limited by the boundaries you impose on
yourself.
