Nedra Ellis

Staff pharmacist
In my first position after pharmacy school, I worked at a large, local
community pharmacy. I helped with grand openings, scheduling, and other
store operations. On the clinical side, I learned patient counseling techniques
and increased my overall drug knowledge. I had the opportunity to learn
about retail pharmacy management, however, there was limited growth potential
in retail pharmacy. That is when I joined Medco Health as a staff pharmacist.
I was brought in as one of the first of five pharmacists in our Cincinnati
pharmacy. I quickly learned about regulatory and compliance issues, participated
in interventions related to drug therapy management in doctor calls, DUR
and Seniors DUR. As the pharmacy grew, so too did the Seniors DUR area.
After just six months, I was asked to lead this functional area with supervisory
and training responsibilities for three other pharmacists. My responsibilities
continued to increase rapidly. I rotated through many areas, including
becoming a trainer for new hire classes.
Pharmacist supervisor
Shortly after my second anniversary with Medco Health, I was promoted
to supervisor. Initially, my duties included the supervision of the order
completion and order review areas, where I evaluated performance, quality
and effectiveness. After a year and a half, my responsibilities shifted
to supervision of DUR interventions including Seniors DUR. Most recently,
my responsibilities have grown to include supervision of the Quality Assurance
department and a more direct focus on quality enhancement. At Medco Health,
I've learned that if you like to do new things, you can find it
here. You can develop yourself and be independent about reaching your
career and professional goals. I believe Medco Health's greatest
strength is its size. I work with over 200 pharmacists, and that means
I'm learning and sharing with my peers every day.
