Heather Long

Resident
While still in school, I knew that I was interested in pursuing a career
in a managed care setting. But I did not feel that my pharmacy education
alone provided me with enough background to be successful in managed care;
so I decided a residency position was the best way to prepare myself.
My residency experience at Medco really taught me a lot because I was
exposed to so many different areas of the company through 10 or 12 rotations
during the yearlong program.
Clinical Account Executive
After my residency, I accepted a position as a clinical manager
in the Account Management division, and since then have been promoted
to clinical account executive. Designated account teams service
each of our clients the companies for which we provide pharmacy
benefit management services and every account has a pharmacist
as a key part of that team. I spend most of my time learning about
my clients, what their goals are and what clinical programs or plan
design might work best for them. I am the clinical expert on my
team, so all clinical questions usually involve me. At the same
time it is essential for me to keep up with trends in pharmacy and
any current events that may impact our clients.
