About Our Externship Rotations

The Medco Health Externship Program is a unique learning opportunity that allows you to learn more about the practice of pharmacy in a managed care environment, specifically a pharmacy benefits manager (PBM). During an externship rotation at Medco Health, students may participate in the following activities:

  • Research, interpret and be able to participate in or lead discussions on current events relevant to managed care through the critique of journal articles and presentation of summary and impact assessment on PBM and managed care.
  • Participate in clinical drug information activities, providing health and drug-related information to health care professionals and patients.
  • Learn about the history and evolution of managed care in the United States, focusing on the impact of pharmacy management as a growing component of the health care dollar expenditure, and the evolution of PBMs.
  • Work closely with Medco Health pharmacists and assist/participate in their daily activities and projects, attending appropriate meetings and training sessions.

Please note that externship activities may vary depending on the pharmacy location and preceptor availability. Here is a brief overview of all three corporately-based rotation opportunities:

  • E-Commerce Technology – Based in our E-commerce department, this rotation provides an overall understanding of the different audiences that use the internet, and of the importance and uses of the internet in providing healthcare information.

  • Clinical Practices and Education – Based in the Clinical Practices and Education department, this rotation provides pharmacy students with an introduction to the various career opportunities available to pharmacists in a managed care organization. There is focus on demonstrating the ability to make rational, patient-specific therapeutic decisions based upon critical evaluation of the literature and clinical experience.

  • Electronic Prescription Technology – Based in our Client Support division, this rotation provides an understanding of physician and office staff interactions with the PBM industry, especially physician and office staff use of prescription and other healthcare technology in the outpatient setting today.

If you are interested in an externship at Medco Health, contact the Experiential Learning/Educational Director at your College of Pharmacy to see if an agreement offering an externship rotation at one of Medco Health's pharmacies currently exists. If there is no such agreement, then proceed by completing the following steps:

  1. With the help of your Experiential Director, review state and college specific requirements for preceptor status and externship site, including required registration with your State Board of Pharmacy
  2. Work with your Experiential Director to develop a draft of the goals and objectives to be completed during your externship at Medco Health.
  3. Contact Becky A. Nagle (below) to discuss the details of your externship including goals and objectives, potential projects, pharmacy locations, and preceptor availability.
